Intelligent Transport Systems Australia (ITS Australia) promotes the development and deployment of advanced technologies to deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable transport across all public and private modes: air, sea, road, and rail.

Established in 1992, ITS Australia is an independent not-for-profit incorporated membership organisation representing ITS suppliers, government authorities, academia, and transport businesses. Affiliated with peak ITS organisations around the world, ITS Australia is a major contributor to the development of the industry.

Key activities include convening national summits and international conferences, facilitating dialogue between transport modes and across government jurisdictions, promoting research and development, and the export of Australian technologies.

As set out in the ITS Australia Strategic Plan 2018-2021ITS Australia advocates the application of communication, data processing, and electronic technologies for in-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and mode-to-mode systems to increase transportation safety and sustainability, reduce congestion, and improve the performance and competitiveness of Australia’s networks.

Shaping Future Transport for over 25 years

ITS Australia was formed in 1992 and for over 25 years has been the voice of the industry, collectively shaping future transport.

To recognize this milestone a new seal has been developed to complement the existing ITS Australia logo. We created this to celebrate what the industry has achieved in this time – so much work has gone into building a strong ITS industry in Australia, an industry that is recognised globally, that we wanted to reflect on the history as we look towards the future and the next 25 years, and beyond.

We look forward to supporting all our Member organizations, and together we will continue Shaping Future Transport.

Deliver safer, more efficient and environmentally sustainable mobility through the use of intelligent transport systems (ITS) technology.

Our mission, as the peak body, is to promote and facilitate collaboration and partnering amongst industry, government, and academia in researching, developing and deploying ITS technologies.

ITS World Congress Host

ITS Australia has had the privilege of hosting two successful ITS World Congresses – the 8th ITS World Congress (Sydney 2001) and 23rd ITS World Congress (Melbourne 2016).

Key messages, themes, moments and memories of the 23rd World Congress have been captured in two Reports.

Smart Transport for Australia describes the status of ITS in Australia, providing examples of local and international initiatives with contributions from the global ITS leaders. Launched on 1 March 2017, the Report captures key Congress messages, with a focus on Australian considerations, identifying industry initiatives, opportunities, and benefits. The Report is available for download here.

The Post Congress Report was compiled by a team of expert ITS professionals (Rapporteurs) who fully understand the challenges and opportunities of the industry. The Report is a documented record of the 23rd World Congress and a reference point for the industry. The Report is available to download here.

ITS technologies include:

  • In-vehicle systems – electronic stability control, lane detection, adaptive cruise control, intelligent speed assist etc.
  • Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) – intersection arrival, collision avoidance systems and emergency notification systems.
  • Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) systems – traveler information services (real-time navigation, car parking and fuel availability), traffic signal and variable speed control, tolling and freight management systems.
