MEDIA RELEASE – 7th Australian Intelligent Transport Systems Summit A Success In Melbourne

Melbourne 9 September 2019 – The 7th Australian Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Summit connected transport technology leaders from across the globe to explore the role of future technology in the context of international collaboration and rapidly evolving standards.

The Summit, 28-29 August 2019 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), was attended by more than 500 stakeholders within Australian transport technology, representing industry, government, and academia. The two-day program featured 45 speakers, from leading Australian and global ITS organisations.

Twenty-five industry exhibitors filled the busy and expansive exhibition hall at the MCEC in Southbank, Melbourne. In prime position was the Lexus vehicle currently being tested in the connected vehicle trials in a partnership between Lexus Australia and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The Hon. Alan Tudge, Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure met exhibitors showcasing Australian innovation in the transport and technology sector before delivering his keynote address.

Five Key Takeaways from the 7th Australian ITS Summit

It was an honour co-chairing the 2019 Australian ITS Summit – a great event that promotes the development and deployment of technologies that deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable transport across all public and private modes.

This year’s theme centred around Shaping Future Transport, which opened the door to exciting discussions and bold new ideas.

Here are my top five takeaways from the two-day event.

1. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is shifting from concept to reality

The Australian transport industry has never seen the level of change that it is currently experiencing. MaaS offers the potential to drastically improve commuter choices, reduce travel costs, increase network capacity and transport sustainability while improving social and environmental outcomes.

MaaS is no longer a concept with case studies being shared around alternative modes of transport, including on-demand bus services, electric scooters, and the early use of autonomous shuttles. What united the conversation was the better connections between the different modes of transport and the critical role data plays in connecting everything.

2. Congestion issues in metro areas are one step closer to being solved

Did you know that approximately 30 per cent of urban congestion is caused by cars looking for a park? The good news – ITS partners are developing smart technology that shares real-time information about where to find a park to improve the flow of traffic.

Another great example is the use of dynamic speed monitoring on major freeways. For example, The Western Australian Government is set to reduce congestion on its highways by approximately 30 per cent through the use of dynamic speed monitoring rather than building additional lanes.

3. Predictive technology will play an essential role in the future of ITS

Innovative ITS technologies are already available – providing real, tangible benefits to commuters.

For example, ‘time to leave’ alerts are gaining in prevalence and popularity. Thanks to predictive technology, commuters can now assess their route based on real-time congestion to minimise their time in transit.

Intelematics has also developed a predictive battery algorithm that informs vehicle owners of an impending battery failure before it occurs. It’s these predictive technologies that work to keep people moving.

4. Visions are set on a more sustainable future

Many conversations centred around the sustainability benefits of ITS technology. ITS technology creates greater efficiencies across our transport networks; for example, the ability to regulate services on demand. These efficiencies create a reduction in emissions and congestion, which, in turn, make our cities more sustainable.

Combined with the push for alternative, sustainable fuel sources and the development of infrastructure to support these vehicles, a future of zero vehicle emissions and zero roadside casualties through smart, predictive transport systems may soon be a reality.

5. Collaboration, partnerships and diversity are crucial to innovation

Collaboration, partnerships and diversity were recurring themes throughout this year’s Summit. In an industry with so many moving parts, the best solutions are developed when multiple players combine resources and ideas. We need to see continued collaboration, particularly between government and industry, to ensure we’re embracing ITS technologies in the best possible way to plan for a sustainable future that helps keep people moving.

The quicker we embrace and develop ITS technologies, the faster we reap the benefits, which include improved safety, reduced harmful carbon emissions and reduced congestion.

The ITS Summit is always a fantastic event – and this year was no exception. I, for one, can’t wait to see how ITS progresses over the next few years and how Intelematics will continue to play an essential role in keeping Australians moving.

Cubic to Demonstrate a Proof of Concept Connected Car System at CAV Scotland 2018

SAN DIEGO – Oct. 30, 2018 – Cubic Corporation today announced that its Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) business division will demonstrate its proof of concept for a connected in-vehicle information system at CAV Scotland 2018 in Edinburgh, from October 31–November 1.

Brian Negus announced as recipient of the Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award 2018

ITS Australia President Dean Zabrieszach has announced Brian Negus, Ambassador to ITS Australia, is to be recognised for his outstanding contribution to the Australian Transport and Intelligent Transport Systems industry as the 2018 recipient of the Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award is an industry nominated award, named after Dr. Max Lay AM, a globally recognised pioneer and leader in Transport and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Recipients must personify achievement of the ultimate standard for a leader in the ITS field.

Brian Negus’ transport career has spanned over 50 years with extensive experience in the public sector, transferring that experience to support public policy on transport initiatives through his leadership in the private sector. Brian remains engaged in several high-profile and influential roles, including Ambassador to ITS Australia, where he continues to lead, guide and mentor organisations and individuals on a broad range of transport issues, especially smart technology solutions to improve transport, despite retiring from full-time employment.

Dean Zabrieszach, President ITS Australia said “Brian is a trusted adviser in the entire transport field and he is widely valued because of his dedication and assiduity in supporting others and helping them to succeed.

“For most of his career, Brian has been driving organisations, and the community, for progress in the transportation sector, especially smart technology solutions to improve transport safety, mobility and sustainability. It is because of this that the industry has chosen Brian to be the recipient of the Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I congratulate Brian on behalf of ITS Australia, and we look forward to officially presenting the award to him at the end of November.”

Shortlisted Nominations announced for ITS Australia National Awards 2018

The intelligent transport industry in Australia continues to demonstrate its innovation and strengths through the nominations submitted to ITS Australia for the prestigious ITS Australia National Awards 2018.

Hosted by ITS Australia, the annual National ITS Awards recognise high-level individual and team achievement and are an opportunity to celebrate innovation and reward excellence.

In their 9th year, the Awards will be hosted by ITS Australia at Sofitel Brisbane on 22 November 2018, where the winners will be announced.

Neil Scales, Director-General, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland who will be the Keynote Speaker for the event said “The ITS Australia National Awards are a valued part of the annual calendar for transport and technology alike.

“Integrated transport networks are an important responsibility to the community and I know there is so much work going on in Queensland alone. ITS Australia responds to Federal government announcement of Office of Future Transport Technologies

Melbourne Monday 8 October 2018,

ITS Australia has welcomed the establishment of a new Office for Future Transport Technologies, announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack.

In the announcement, Mr. McCormack said the new Office would enhance the Federal Government’s strategic leadership role, to coordinate more cohesively with other governments and agencies to implement future transport technologies in Australia more successfully and responsibly.

He said the development and uptake of automated vehicle technologies and associated applications would also be managed with a continued focus on improving transport and road safety outcomes.

This includes automated and connected vehicle technologies which will make our roads safer.

The initiative will also help Australian businesses to take advantage of new opportunities and create a supportive environment for innovation in the rapidly expanding transport and mobility industry.

Australian Government and the US State of Michigan sign cooperative MOU

Melbourne, Tuesday, 2 October 2018, ITS Australia participated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Australian Government and the US State of Michigan, signed by The Hon. Andrew Broad, Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, and Kirk Steudle, Director, Michigan Department of Transport.

The Australian Government is positioning the nation for safer roads through collaboration on high-tech vehicle and road systems, made possible by signing the MOU.

The signing took place at the University of Melbourne which has played a central role in advancing the transport technology agreement between the governments of Australia and Michigan, primarily through AIMES (Australian Integrated Multimodal EcoSystem), of which ITS Australia is an active supporter.

Activities in Michigan and Australia are leading the development of intelligent transport technology and the MOU supports links between AIMES, home to a live test bed on Melbourne city streets, and Michigan’s Mcity and American Center for Mobility off-road facilities that will be highly beneficial in progressing advancement in this field.

ITS Australia and Austroads, along with the University of Melbourne, are included in the MOU as key to supporting the bilateral cooperation on connected, automated and autonomous vehicle technologies occurring across the Australian, and Michigan ITS communities.

At the signing of the MOU, ITS Australia President Dean Zabrieszach said that he was grateful for the opportunity this MOU presents to the Australian ITS industry, “In particular the chance to for us to create and shape global best practice for the future of intelligent transport, connected and automated vehicles.”

Mcity is a 32-acre mock city and proving ground built for the testing of wirelessly connected and driver-less cars located on the University of Michigan North Campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (https://mcity.umich.edu/)
